While talking with The Hollywood Reporter, Emmerich was asked if he could see himself getting back into the director's chair for another "Moonfall" movie. As he is never one to do things in halves, Emmerich revealed that he has not one, but two more movies in mind to follow the 2022 film. The director explained his opinion on the matter, saying, "If it's an enormous, enormous success, why not?" He then suggested a plan, stating, "What I will then do, is do two and three together. And have a real, clear cliffhanger [in between]."
Cutting things down the middle is a common plan that fans eat up. As far back as "The Matrix" and "Harry Potter," franchises have dared to tease fans with a cut to black before the final installment — Emmerich is just more likely do it with the world on fire and someone saying "God help us" before the credits roll. Of course, that's only if it's a good, successful transmission with "Moonfall" and audiences will want to return to the theater to watch more of this universe.
